synths, then and now

I’m on my synth phase again. There’s just something about synthesizers. They have played a significant role in shaping the music landscape since their inception.

Synthesizers are electronic musical instruments that generate and manipulate sound through electronic circuits and components. They have a rich history, originating from early experiments in sound synthesis and evolving into powerful and versatile instruments that have shaped modern music.

.The origin of synthesizers can be traced back to the early 20th century when inventors and musicians began exploring ways to electronically generate and manipulate sound. One of the earliest notable achievements in this field was the Telharmonium, developed by Thaddeus Cahill in the late 1890s. It was a massive electromechanical instrument capable of producing a wide range of sounds using rotating tone wheels.

.Robert Moog’s Moog synthesizer, first introduced in the 1960s, gained popularity and became a staple in electronic music production. It featured a modular design, with various modules such as oscillators, filters, and envelope generators that could be connected and controlled to shape sound.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, synthesizers evolved further, with the introduction of polyphonic synthesizers capable of playing multiple notes simultaneously and the integration of microprocessors for enhanced control and sound manipulation. Manufacturers like Roland, Yamaha, and Korg played a significant role in popularizing synthesizers and making them more accessible to musicians.

The development of digital technology in the 1980s led to the emergence of digital synthesizers, which used digital signal processing techniques to generate and manipulate sound. These instruments offered a vast range of sounds, effects, and programmability, revolutionizing the music industry and enabling musicians to explore new sonic territories.

I picked up this DIY kit from Korg, NTs-1 a mini synthesizer which is supposed to be a good introduction to synthesizers and so far I’m seeing that it is! It’s portable, compact, fits in a pocket, it was fun and easy to build! It’s powerful and it is electro-cute ^_^
